Inspiration - Health Care
Anna Fryxelius is an award winning public speaker in the health care field. With her story of overcoming incredible health challenges, Anna has inspired thousands.
In her talks to inspire health care workers, patients and the general public, Anna draws on her own experiences and transmits joy and energy as she talks about serious topics.
Anna's book Kronisk / "Chronic" was published in 2010, and she has been featured on national TV, radio and been a regular contributor on topics of healthcare in Norway's largest daily newspaper, Aftenposten. Her blog was supported by the Free Speech Organisation Fritt Ord as being of importance to the public discourse on disability.
Patient involvement and the new health paradigm
Anna Fryxelius has represented patients with musculo-skeletal conditions and chronic pain at the national level in Norway since 2010. She champions a new health paradigm where patients and health care workers collaborate to achieve sustainable and ethical health care.
Starting out as a patient activist, writing op-eds in national newspapers, her constructive approach led to meeting and invitations from several Ministers of Health, the minister of Labor and many different organisations in the health care field. The last 10 years Anna has travelled all over Norway, speaking to patients and health care workers in her role as chief advisor of the Norwegian Rheumatism Association.
Patient Research
Anna is an advocate for patient involvement in medical research and especially works to further research into musculoskeletal conditions and chronic pain. She has 12 years experience working as a patient advocate, contributing to discourse with researchers and policy makers.
In 2020-2022 Anna led the work to complete a James Lind Alliance Priority Setting Partnership Project where 5400 patients with musculoskeletal conditions participated to identify research gaps in the field of Musculoskeletal Health. The presentation of this work was awarded Best Presentation at the National Conference for Musculoskeletal Research in Norway, November 2022.
Wrong diagnosis? Too bad!
Having met the health care system with different diagnoses - Anna Fryxelius is baffled by the lack of oversight and coherent policies for diagnoses that don't "fit" the current medical paradigm. "Science is slow - suffering is fast" While it takes on average 17 years before a new treatment is available to te public - after rigorous trials have shown it to be effective - a person can become severely afflicted and disabled in a matter of months, leading to substantial loss of quality of life AND significant costs for society.
Anna Fryxelius especially champions research and better treatment for overlooked and under-prioritised diagnoses. Especially Chronic pain, Myalgic Encephalitis, Long Covid, Endometriosis and Fibromyalgia. These patients are severely afflicted, yet get very little help from the current health care systems.
Anna manages to convey hope and courage also to those who have struggled to be heard.
This was on a day where I was weak after an autoimmune flare up. I use the wheelchair on days like that - but on better days I am able to walk and dance around.
In this movie you get a glimpse of Anna speaking at a seminar where leading academics, research funders and public policy makers in Norway were gathered
This talk was held 25th of January, 2023,at OsloMET University - in a collaboration with the Norwegian Research Council.
